Opinion: Gun violence is a public health epidemic - CNN.com: CNN) -- "Don't know if you heard reports of shots fired in Paramus Garden State Plaza -- suspect in body armor and carrying long rifle."

I received this text from a friend at 9:59 on Monday evening. This would be a disturbing message for anyone to read, but it was especially alarming to me because Paramus, New Jersey -- the place where the shooting was taking place -- is my hometown.

We have all watched media reports of heart-breaking gun violence at grammar schools, universities, barbershops, movie theaters, shopping malls, workplaces, airports. But it feels different when your hometown is on the national news as the location. You truly get the sense that no place is safe.

George Stinney, Black Teen Executed In 1944, May Get New Trial

George Stinney, Black Teen Executed In 1944, May Get New Trial: COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Supporters of a 14-year-old black boy executed in 1944 for killing two white girls are asking a South Carolina judge to take the unheard-of move of granting him a new trial in hopes he will be cleared of the charges.

George Stinney was convicted on a shaky confession in a segregated society that wanted revenge for the beating deaths of two girls, ages 11 and 7, according to the lawsuit filed last month on Stinney's behalf in Clarendon County.

The request for a new trial has an uphill climb. The judge may refuse to hear it at all, since the punishment was already carried out. Also, South Carolina has strict rules for introducing new evidence after a trial is complete, requiring the information to have been impossible to discover before the trial and likely to change the results, said Kenneth Gaines, a professor at the University of South Carolina's law school.

Guns & Ammo editor Jim Bequette resigns amid gun control column uproar - CNN.com

Guns & Ammo editor Jim Bequette resigns amid gun control column uproar - CNN.com: (CNN) -- The editor of Guns & Ammo magazine apologized to readers and resigned immediately, earlier than planned, after he published a column advocating gun control, enraging his readers.

Editor Jim Bequette wanted to "generate a healthy exchange of ideas on gun rights" when he published a commentary by Dick Metcalf, who wrote that he supported regulations on firearms.

Instead, the column in the December issue "aroused unprecedented controversy" among readers who began "questioning 'Guns & Ammo's commitment to the Second Amendment," Bequette wrote in his apology.

Bequette also fired Metcalf, a gun writer who had written the Firearms Law column for the magazine's sister publication, Shooting Times.

Washington Redskins: Racist or a sporting exception? – CNN World Sport - CNN.com Blogs: In 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in American sport when he took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers as the first African American to play in the formerly all-white baseball league.

Seven decades later, even though the racial tensions are nowhere near what they were when Robinson made history, one of the United States’ most storied sporting franchises still clings to a term many critics argue supports racial intolerance.

The NFL’s Washington Redskins have carried their name since 1933, when they were the Boston Redskins. When the football team moved to the capital four years later, they brought the name with them and have held it ever since.

Nothing scarier than a nervous white man: The “Redskins” debate is really about white privilege - Salon.com

Nothing scarier than a nervous white man: The “Redskins” debate is really about white privilege - Salon.com: Redskin. The word relegates complex humanity to a lifeless specimen, a stagnant and specious simulation of a physiognomy invented during a time of conquest. It reduces cultural identity to the wholly unreliable tableau of melanin and nose structure. It is of a specific historical moment, but exists outside of time, like the immutable figure it purports to represent.

The mascot accompanying the word is a brand, a commodity, selling not merely image or design but also the thoroughgoing cant of colonial fantasy. It also sells identity. The identity it peddles has nothing to do with being Native.

The Redskins mascot is a powerful symbol and progenitor of majoritarian angst in today’s United States.

Arkansas Town Responds To Controversial 'Anti-Racist Is A Code Word For Anti-White' Sign

Arkansas Town Responds To Controversial 'Anti-Racist Is A Code Word For Anti-White' Sign: The billboard has been up since Oct. 15 in the north Arkansas town. The Huffington Post first learned of its existence when a reader who spotted the sign on a recent road trip sent in a photo.

"Although we were all horrified by the billboard and really could not understand how this could happen in 2013, I did photograph it as I needed more time to meditate on the people that did this," the tipster wrote.

Harrison has just 34 black residents out of a population of 12,943, according to 2010 census figures cited by KATV. Ten years ago, the town established a race-relations task force in an attempt to adjust it’s reputation for racial discrimination and violence.

A report from the Associated Press calls attention to race riots in the early 20th century that were responsible for chasing “all but one black person from Harrison.” The KKK uses a P.O. Box located in the town, and its headquarters are 15 miles away in Zinc, Ark.

Pine Bush, N.Y., School District Faces Accusations of Anti-Semitism - NYTimes.com: A picture of President Obama, with a swastika drawn on his forehead, remained on the wall of an eighth-grade social studies classroom for about a month after a student informed her teacher, the student said.

For some Jewish students in the Pine Bush Central School District in New York State, attending public school has been nothing short of a nightmare. They tell of hearing anti-Semitic epithets and nicknames, and horrific jokes about the Holocaust.

They have reported being pelted with coins, told to retrieve money thrown into garbage receptacles, shoved and even beaten. They say that on school buses in this rural part of the state, located about 90 minutes north of New York City and once home to a local Ku Klux Klan chapter president, students have chanted “white power” and made Nazi salutes with their arms.

Why ‘60 Minutes' Stood By Benghazi Source Before Retracting Report

Why ‘60 Minutes' Stood By Benghazi Source Before Retracting Report: NEW YORK -- When The Washington Post revealed on Oct. 31 that security officer Dylan Davies once told his employer he never reached the U.S. compound in Benghazi during the Sept. 11, 2012, terrorist attack, it raised serious questions about a “60 Minutes” broadcast four days earlier.

Davies, using the pseudonym Morgan Jones, appeared on "60 Minutes" on Oct. 27 as an eyewitness on the ground that night in Libya. He provided a harrowing –- and it now turns out bogus -– account of scaling a 12-foot wall and knocking out a terrorist with his gun butt before returning home unseen. On Nov. 1, Davies told The Daily Beast he lied to his employer about not reaching the compound, but had told the truth in the “60 Minutes” interview and in a book published two days later by a CBS subsidiary. (The book has now been recalled.)

According to a complaint filed Friday in a federal court in New Mexico, what happened next in the October 2012 incident was nothing short of a six-hour nightmare. Young, 31, was forced to strip from the waist down in a public parking lot and then submit his body to an X-ray and anal penetration at a nearby hospital, all under the supervision of peace officers searching for contraband.

The 10 strangest facts about penises - Salon.com

The 10 strangest facts about penises - Salon.com: Simone de Beauvoir called it “a small person … an alter ego usually more sly … and more clever than the individual.” Leonardo da Vinci said it “has dealings with human intelligence and sometimes displays an intelligence of its own.” Sophocles said that having one was to be “chained to a madman.”

These great thinkers were referring so exasperatedly, so powerlessly, to none other than the penis. That’s a lot of hype for a body part that can “be seen as something the Creator doodled in an idle moment,” as Tom Hickman puts it in the new book, “God’s Doodle: The Life and Times of the Penis.” Then again, our fascination with the penis has long belied its relatively small size (the average one is believed to be 6.2 inches long when erect). It’s fitting, then, that Hickman, a journalist, has written an expansive history of the male member covering everything from biological explanations of its shape and size to analysis of phallic myths.

3 Reasons Divorce Is Harder On Men Than Women

3 Reasons Divorce Is Harder On Men Than Women: It turns out that in the age-old battle of the sexes, men seem to be having a more difficult time coping with the dissolution of a marriage. According to a recent study from the Journal of Men's Health, divorced men are more susceptible to heart disease, high blood pressure, and strokes than married men are — in addition to being 39 percent more likely to commit suicide and engage in risky behavior.

We spoke with relationship coach and YourTango expert Lewis Denbaum to get to the bottom of these statistics. "The last time I got divorced, which was in 2003, my blood pressure went through the roof," said Denbaum. "I had to start taking blood pressure medicine for the first time in my life."

As someone who had been practicing transcendental meditation for over 30 years, Denbaum was surprised to find that while going through his second divorce, his meditation techniques had no effect whatsoever. "I realized then that I had to step outside of the box of my life, and examine my thoughts and beliefs," he said.

Librarian says she was fired after complaining of colleagues having sex in children’s section | Fox News: A New Mexico librarian says she was fired after alerting the town’s mayor about an incident involving a colleague and another municipal worker having sex in the children’s section of the library.

KRQE News 13 quotes Jamie Kurz’s attorney as saying his client got the pink slip Oct. 10 – and now plans to file a tort claim with the town of Estancia, which could then lead to a whistle-blower lawsuit.

The story begins in August, when Kurz reportedly arrived to work early at the Estancia Public Library, and saw two parked vehicles, one belonging to the head librarian and the other to the town maintenance department.

Joseph CampBell, the attorney now representing Kurz, told KRQE his client entered the library – and heard strange noises emanating from the children’s section.

Using a test called DNA barcoding, a kind of genetic fingerprinting that has also been used to help uncover labeling fraud in the commercial seafood industry, Canadian researchers tested 44 bottles of popular supplements sold by 12 companies. They found that many were not what they claimed to be, and that pills labeled as popular herbs were often diluted — or replaced entirely — by cheap fillers like soybean, wheat and rice.

America’s international image slipping – Global Public Square - CNN.com Blogs

America’s international image slipping – Global Public Square - CNN.com Blogs: Editor’s note: Bruce Stokes is director of global economic attitudes at the Pew Research Center. The views expressed are his own.

In the fifth year of the Obama presidency, the United States’ image remains strong around the world compared with the last years of the administration of President George W. Bush. Still, pro-America sentiment is slipping.

The decline is in no way comparable to the collapse of U.S. standing in the first decade of this century. But the “Obama bounce” in the global stature of the United States experienced in 2009 is clearly a thing of the past. And this gradual erosion of support is, in part, due to the diminishing popularity of U.S. President Barack Obama himself in some nations.

In 28 of 38 nations, half or more of those surveyed express a favorable opinion of the U.S., according to a new poll by the Pew Research Center. This includes more than half those surveyed in seven of eight European countries, including three quarters in Italy, two thirds in Poland and 64 percent in France. Only in Greece does just 39 percent of the public say they have a favorable view of Uncle Sam.

On Facebook, a growing teenage wasteland - CNN.com

On Facebook, a growing teenage wasteland - CNN.com: (CNN) -- Nicole Uvieghara is only 18, but that's old enough to remember the good old days on Facebook.

"I used to log in to Facebook every day," said Uvieghara, a Murrieta, California, native and freshman at Arizona State University. "Now, I go, like, once a week. On my news feed, I rarely see posts from my friends and I have not posted things on my wall in the past year."

Her experience isn't unusual. Teens are cooling on Facebook, a trend suggested by recent research and acknowledged, this week by Facebook itself. The shift was confirmed time and time again in e-mail and phone interviews with dozens of teens and their parents in CNN's reporting of this story.

Twins study shows smoking ages your face faster - CNN.com

Twins study shows smoking ages your face faster - CNN.com: (CNN) -- Here's something to think about the next time you put a cigarette to your lips: The skin around those lips is going to look older, faster.

You're also more likely to get bags under your eyes sooner. And jowls. And more wrinkles around those lips.

Researchers in Ohio studied the physical differences between the faces of nonsmokers and their twins who smoked and found confirmation of a long-held belief: Smoking does indeed age you.

The study, by researchers at the Department of Plastic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University, looked at 79 sets of twins between the ages of 18 and 78 at the annual August gathering of twins in Twinsburg, Ohio. Each person had his or her picture taken by a professional photographer.

An exclusive interview with Bill Gates - FT.com: Bill Gates describes himself as a technocrat. But he does not believe that technology will save the world. Or, to be more precise, he does not believe it can solve a tangle of entrenched and interrelated problems that afflict humanity’s most vulnerable: the spread of diseases in the developing world and the poverty, lack of opportunity and despair they engender. “I certainly love the IT thing,” he says. “But when we want to improve lives, you’ve got to deal with more basic things like child survival, child nutrition.”

After writing the ticket, Gelhaus ordered Westbrook to follow him back to his cruiser and pulled his weapon again before frisking him.

Sex workers embrace Obamacare - Nov. 1, 2013

Sex workers embrace Obamacare - Nov. 1, 2013: Organized by "Siouxsie Q," a Bay Area sex worker, the event was meant to encourage other sex workers to enroll in the new insurance exchanges. It was a rousing success: Nearly 40 men and women attended and almost all of them filed enrollment paperwork.

In the all-cash, off-the-books sex industry, workers can be particularly high risk and insurance is often out of reach. Many sex workers -- a broad term that can refer to a number of services, including sexual massage, prostitution, and escort and dominatrix work -- consider themselves self-employed entrepreneurs who can't afford to purchase healthcare. But that could all change with the Affordable Care Act.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction announced a new execution policy last month and said Monday that it would use that system's second option: a combination of a sedative and painkiller never tried before in a U.S. execution.

Charles Krauthammer: Obamacare laid bare - The Washington Post

Charles Krauthammer: Obamacare laid bare - The Washington Post: Every disaster has its moment of clarity. Physicist Richard Feynman dunks an O-ring into ice water and everyone understands instantly why the shuttle Challenger exploded. This week, the Obamacare O-ring froze for all the world to see: Hundreds of thousands of cancellation letters went out to people who had been assured a dozen times by the president that “If you like your health-care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health-care plan. Period.”

The cancellations lay bare three pillars of Obamacare: (a) mendacity, (b) paternalism and (c) subterfuge.

Three out of the 10 least reliable vehicles have high-enough test scores to be recommended, but their poor reliability prevents them from reaching that recommended status. So, it's important to look at performance in our tests and reliability, because a high scoring car isn't always a smart purchase choice if it isn't reliable.

Elizabeth Warren Destroys Financial Crisis Myth

Elizabeth Warren Destroys Financial Crisis Myth: Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Tuesday rejected the notion that affordable housing mandates for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac caused the financial crisis, five years after it began.

"While the crisis was massive and painful -- and its impact continues to weigh on middle-class families to this day -- its underlying cause was fairly clear," she said in remarks to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s 100th Annual Convention & Expo in Washington. "The GSEs [government-sponsored enterprises] made significant mistakes -- mistakes that cost taxpayers dearly -- but those mistakes were not the underlying cause of the crisis."

"Although Fannie and Freddie purchased securities backed by subprime loans, and some of those purchases helped fulfill their affordable housing goals, the St. Louis Fed economists found that the housing goals had no impact -- no impact -- on either the number of subprime loans originated or the price of those loans in the private-label market," she said. "Affordable housing goals have been scapegoated by those who have been itching to get rid of the goals for a long time, but I think it’s time to drop that red herring."

This is why Obamacare is canceling some people’s insurance plans

This is why Obamacare is canceling some people’s insurance plans: Let's start with the very basics here. About 15 million people purchase health insurance policies on the individual market. That's about 5 percent of the population. When they do so, they typically purchase a 12-month contract with an insurance company. And when that contract runs out, both the individual and the insurance plan have an escape hatch. The individual can decide to no longer purchase the plan -- and the insurance company can decide to no longer offer the plan.

Most individuals don't stay in the individual market very long: One study, published in the journal Health Affairs, found that 17 percent of individual market subscribers purchased the same plan for two straight years or longer.

JPMorgan’s $13 billion settlement deal with Justice Dept. at risk of falling apart - The Washington Post: Settlement talks between the Justice Department and JPMorgan Chase are in danger of breaking down over the bank’s demands that it avoid future criminal charges and that another government agency pay some of the $13 billion price tag, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

Federal prosecutors have been working with JPMorgan for months to resolve allegations that the bank knowingly sold securities made up of low-quality mortgages in the lead-up to the financial crisis. As of last week, the nation’s largest bank had agreed to a tentative $13 billion settlement that would expunge multiple government probes. Details of the agreement were being hashed out, but now the sides have reached an impasse.

Computer Scientists 'Prove' God Exists - ABC News

Computer Scientists 'Prove' God Exists - ABC News: Two scientists have formalized a theorem regarding the existence of God penned by mathematician Kurt Gödel. But the God angle is somewhat of a red herring -- the real step forward is the example it sets of how computers can make scientific progress simpler.

As headlines go, it's certainly an eye-catching one. "Scientists Prove Existence of God," German daily Die Welt wrote last week.

But unsurprisingly, there is a rather significant caveat to that claim. In fact, what the researchers in question say they have actually proven is a theorem put forward by renowned Austrian mathematician Kurt Gödel -- and the real news isn't about a Supreme Being, but rather what can now be achieved in scientific fields using superior technology.

Man enters burning house to rescue beer - WTVM.com-Columbus, GA News Weather & Sports: COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
Officials are still investigating the cause of a house fire that broke out on 42nd St. near Oates Ave. in Columbus, Thursday afternoon, but residents are blaming a newly installed water heater.

Six adults and two young children were inside watching television when the room began filling with smoke. After the children were rescued and everyone made it outside safely, a man who walks with a cane went back in the burning house to retrieve something he left behind.

"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," said Walter Serpit, "I went back into the house like a dummy and the door shut on me because this back draft was about to kill me."

Serpit managed to save several cans of beer and he escaped the home without getting burned.

The Red Cross arrived shortly after firefighters extinguished the flames and they are helping the family get back on their feet. One Red Cross volunteer at the scene said they were able to respond quickly because a neighbor alerted them to the situation.

Opinion: Confederate flag was the flag of traitors - CNN.com

Opinion: Confederate flag was the flag of traitors - CNN.com: CNN) -- You can debate whether the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism. But the one thing you can't dispute: The Confederate flag was flown by traitors to the United States of America who slaughtered more than 110,000 U.S. soldiers.

I know some will take issue with my calling the Confederacy a band of traitors, but let's be blunt -- that's what they were. They broke from the United States and created their own nation, calling it the Confederate States of America. They issued their own currency, elected their own president and Congress, raised an army and went to war with the United States of America, firing the first shot at Fort Sumter, South Carolina.

Young man linked to 79 killings in Mexico - CNN.com

Young man linked to 79 killings in Mexico - CNN.com: (CNN) -- The most shocking thing about the arrest of a man linked to 79 killings may be that authorities don't find it shocking.

At 20 years old, Juan Pablo Vazquez is accused of killing rivals, a policeman, a stripper and other innocent bystanders.

But you won't find authorities in the northern economic hub of Monterrey, Mexico, using any superlatives to describe the alleged killer. Not the worst they've ever seen, not the most ruthless, not the youngest or most prolific.

That's because Monterrey and its surroundings are an area disputed by rival drug cartels. From 2010 to the present, an average of 108 people have been killed each month in the state of Nuevo Leon, according to official statistics. Monterrey, the capital, has recorded 223 homicides so far this year.

Vazquez's arrest, then, merited a press conference, but no celebration as if an alleged serial killer had been brought down.

"We are witnessing a very severe crisis because of the war between cartels," one Mexican official said.

These Words You Use Every Day Have Racist/Prejudiced Origins, And You Had No Idea

These Words You Use Every Day Have Racist/Prejudiced Origins, And You Had No Idea: When I was a kid, everyone used the phrase Indian giver. We didn't even think about it. We weren't reprimanded by teachers, either. Admittedly, I went to grade school in Texas.

To me, it seems odd that the phrase even still exists. At this point in history, we should all know that it is ridiculous to say that American Indians reneged on their promise to give European settlers land that they had never agreed to give in the first place.

While Indian giver might seem more obviously racist (you certainly wouldn't hear anyone using such a phrase in the office), there are plenty of other phrases that you might use every day that have racist/prejudice origins.

Is The Tea Party Racist? Ask Some Actual, Out-Of-The Closet Racists

Is The Tea Party Racist? Ask Some Actual, Out-Of-The Closet Racists: WASHINGTON -- Tea Party and Republican leaders have been quick to condemn Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) for his recent comparison of the tea party and the Ku Klux Klan. But avowed racists involved in the white nationalist movement might beg to agree with the Florida Democrat.

The KKK, for its part, isn't sure whether the hood fits. "The tea party is a very widespread organization and there's many tea party groups in the country, so I don't know if they are necessarily even in agreement with each other," pastor Thomas Robb, national director of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, told HuffPost. "Likewise, The Klan, people use the phrase Klan who are not associated with us ... that I would be 100 percent opposed to."

Syrian snipers target pregnant women, unborn babies, doctor says - CNN.com

Syrian snipers target pregnant women, unborn babies, doctor says - CNN.com: (CNN) -- An X-ray shows a bullet lodged in a baby's head. The image would be chilling enough without knowing the child was still in its mother's womb when it became the target of snipers hiding in the shadows in northern Syria.

The mother survived. Her baby didn't. And it's not the only one.

Volunteer doctor David Nott, a British surgeon who's worked in several Syrian hospitals with the charity Syria Relief, says snipers are playing a "targeting game," and heavily pregnant women are on the hit list.

The judge denied the request. The judge approved a motion for a mental evaluation, The Boston Herald reported.

USS Forrestal, the Navy's first supercarrier, sold for 1 cent | Fox News

USS Forrestal, the Navy's first supercarrier, sold for 1 cent | Fox News: Here’s a penny for your thoughts: One red cent could’ve landed you the Navy’s first supercarrier, the decommissioned Forrestal.

The U.S. Navy sold the 1,067-foot behemoth to a Texas company, All Star Metals, to be dismantled, scrapped and recycled, Navy officials announced. It's an inauspicious fate for a ship with a colorful — and tragic — history. It's perhaps best known for a 1967 incident in which stray voltage triggered an accidental explosion that struck a plane on the flight deck whose cockpit was occupied by a young John McCain. A chain reaction of blasts and fires ultimately killed 134 men and injured more than 300.

But its rich past and nearly four decades of service are not enough to spare it. The Navy tried to donate the historic ship for use as a memorial or a museum, but no “viable applications” were received.

Federal prosecutors allege that friend tied marathon bombing suspect to 2011 triple murder | Fox News

Federal prosecutors allege that friend tied marathon bombing suspect to 2011 triple murder | Fox News: Federal prosecutors have alleged that one of the two suspects in April's Boston Marathon bombing was implicated in a 2011 triple murder by a friend who was shot and killed by an FBI agent during questioning earlier this year.

The disclosure that Tamerlan Tsarnaev "participated" in the killings in Waltham, Mass., was made Monday in the case against Tamerlan's younger brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Prosecutors are attempting to block a motion by Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's defense team to force the government to turn over information related to the 2011 killings. MyFoxBoston.com reports that the defense team is seeking to use the records to help the younger Tsarnaev avoid the death penalty. A judge's ruling on the motion is pending.

The 18 Most Ridiculous Startup Ideas That Eventually Became Successful

The 18 Most Ridiculous Startup Ideas That Eventually Became Successful: Even the most well-known venture capitalists have startups they regret passing on.

For John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins, it was Twitter. For Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures, it was Airbnb, the home-rental website that’s now worth an estimated $2.5 billion.

“We made the classic mistake that all investors make,” Wilson recalled in a blog post lamenting the blunder. “We focused too much on what they were doing at the time and not enough on what they could do, would do, and did do.”

It’s hard to blame him. After all, a lot of successful companies sounded stupid when they first launched -- see: Rap Genius -- and the vast majority of new businesses flop, sometimes leaving investors with heavy losses.

Wounded Victim of Racist Serial Killer Recounts Nightmare as Execution Nears | Hatewatch

Wounded Victim of Racist Serial Killer Recounts Nightmare as Execution Nears | Hatewatch: Before Joseph Paul Franklin, the prolific racist serial killer, is executed, Terry Jackson-Mitchell wants to look the condemned man in the eye and tell him she forgives him for the nightmares and flashbacks that crashed into her life on a summer night in Utah 33 years ago.

That’s when Franklin wounded Jackson-Mitchell, then 15, and shot and killed her two black friends, jogging a few feet from her in a Salt Lake City park.

“I believe in the old saying, forgiveness is a gift you give yourself,” Jackson-Mitchell, now 49, told Hatewatch in a telephone interview Sunday evening. “I forgive him based on what I’ve read about his horrific childhood. And I forgive him because I refuse to allow that night to define me.”

Army chief: Just 2 brigades combat-ready | Fox News

Army chief: Just 2 brigades combat-ready | Fox News: Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno revealed this week that just two Army brigades are combat-ready, with budget cuts hampering the military's ability to train its own troops.

The startling comments were made Monday at the Association of the U.S. Army conference. Odierno and Army Secretary John McHugh both addressed the fallout from the budget cuts, as well as the recent partial government shutdown, and appealed to lawmakers to restore some stability to military funding.

"Functioning like this is just dysfunctional," Odierno said.

What the F*ck Was Lululemon Thinking? | Carolyn Gregoire

What the F*ck Was Lululemon Thinking? | Carolyn Gregoire: Yoga mega-retailer Lululemon is no stranger to off-color ad campaigns and embarrassing slip-ups (Who could forget the see-through pants debacle?). But the high-market yogawear chain's latest gaffe might just take the proverbial cake.

In a misguided attempt to appeal to aspiring yogis, Lululemon recently launched a new shopping bag series illustrating yoga's traditional five yamas -- principles, or social contracts, of right living, as outlined in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, a traditional compendium of yoga philosophy with roots in the Hindu faith.

As part of the series, the company has been doling out a reusable tote back with one of the yamas, brahmacharya, the Sanskrit term for "celibacy." Scroll down to view the bag below.

David Blair, Texas Man, Claims Dallas Police Had No Reason To Shoot At Him

David Blair, Texas Man, Claims Dallas Police Had No Reason To Shoot At Him: A Texas man claims that Dallas police fired at least a dozen bullets at him -- for no apparent reason.

David Blair says that he was standing outside of his east Oak Cliff apartment on Oct. 2 when a pair of Dallas police officers approached him. The 41-year-old had just moved in that day, and his girlfriend and 3-year-old son were inside, according to KENS-5.

The officers, Richard Cantu and Jesse Aquino, were performing a sweep search for area prostitutes and exited their vehicle to question Blair. Blair had made a comment to a woman who walked by and so police shined a spotlight on him. Blair told the officers to get the light out of his face.

The Most Interesting Man In The World Is Actually Really Interesting

The Most Interesting Man In The World Is Actually Really Interesting: You may not know Jonathan Goldsmith, but you undoubtedly know Dos Equis' Most Interesting Man In The World. The two, in fact, are the same person.

Goldsmith shot to fame in 2006 when his James Bond-like character started "living vicariously through himself," but in a recent interview with Esquire magazine, Goldsmith has unveiled his own overly interesting experiences. One of which, no big deal, involves saving a young girl's life.

"When I was 18, I started out at the Fresh Air Fund for kids in New York City, and it provided an opportunity for kids with disabilities to do all kinds of activities," Goldsmith, 75, said. "One of the things we dealt with were quite a lot of epileptic kids, and when you have to watch 100 kids playing in a pool, thrashing around, it takes a great deal of concentration to determine a child that's having a grand mal fit or a kid that's just playing."

UConn Failed To Investigate Sexual Assault Reports And Protect Victims, Complaint Claims

UConn Failed To Investigate Sexual Assault Reports And Protect Victims, Complaint Claims: It seemed to Kylie Angell that some justice had been served when the University of Connecticut expelled a male student after she reported that he raped her in a campus residence hall in July 2010.

Angell reported the assault to the university at the beginning of the fall 2010 semester, and by October a university hearing had found her assailant responsible for possession of drugs, providing alcohol to a minor, sexual misconduct and breaking and entering.

But the situation changed after he appealed and was allowed back on campus two weeks later. The university did not warn Angell that her attacker was coming back, she said, and instead she learned when he approached her in a campus dining hall on his first day back.

30 Million People Worldwide Are Living As Slaves

30 Million People Worldwide Are Living As Slaves: Modern day slavery still exists, and it's happening at an alarming rate. The Global Slavery Index released a shocking report last week, estimating that almost 30 million people worldwide are living as slaves. The index, compiled by Australian-based rights organization Walk Free Foundation, defines modern day slavery as debt bondage, human trafficking and forced marriage.

The country with the highest proportion of slaves is Mauritania, in West Africa. The report explains that Mauritania has such a high percentage of slaves because people inherit slave status from their ancestors. “It would be comforting to think that slavery is a relic of history, but it remains a scar on humanity on every continent," Walk Free CEO Nick Grono said in a statement provided to The Huffington Post.
