Cancellations, modifications coming for many Americans in individual health consumer market – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs

Cancellations, modifications coming for many Americans in individual health consumer market – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs: Washington (CNN) - The vast majority of Americans on the individual insurance market will see modifications to their existing plans, or even cancellations, according to an insurance industry source.

That raises questions about repeated claims made by President Barack Obama reassuring consumers that if they like their current plan, they can keep it.

"If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan," the president said in August, 2009 at a town hall meeting as the debate over Obamacare was heating up.

Study Finds Clean Sheets Are A Huge Turn-On For Women

Study Finds Clean Sheets Are A Huge Turn-On For Women: Candles are a conventional home accessory for getting your partner in the mood for sex, but a new survey conducted by British entertainment brand Mecca reveals that guys may want to head for the linen closet instead.

In a study of more than 2,000 men and women in England, researchers found that next to losing weight, clean bed linens topped the list of things that make women feel in the mood for sex (ranking higher than a new hairdo and makeup, and that ever-popular hot bath).

Elizabeth Warren Destroys Financial Crisis Myth

Elizabeth Warren Destroys Financial Crisis Myth: Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Tuesday rejected the notion that affordable housing mandates for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac caused the financial crisis, five years after it began.

"While the crisis was massive and painful -- and its impact continues to weigh on middle-class families to this day -- its underlying cause was fairly clear," she said in remarks to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s 100th Annual Convention & Expo in Washington. "The GSEs [government-sponsored enterprises] made significant mistakes -- mistakes that cost taxpayers dearly -- but those mistakes were not the underlying cause of the crisis."

"Although Fannie and Freddie purchased securities backed by subprime loans, and some of those purchases helped fulfill their affordable housing goals, the St. Louis Fed economists found that the housing goals had no impact -- no impact -- on either the number of subprime loans originated or the price of those loans in the private-label market," she said. "Affordable housing goals have been scapegoated by those who have been itching to get rid of the goals for a long time, but I think it’s time to drop that red herring."

This is why Obamacare is canceling some people’s insurance plans

This is why Obamacare is canceling some people’s insurance plans: Let's start with the very basics here. About 15 million people purchase health insurance policies on the individual market. That's about 5 percent of the population. When they do so, they typically purchase a 12-month contract with an insurance company. And when that contract runs out, both the individual and the insurance plan have an escape hatch. The individual can decide to no longer purchase the plan -- and the insurance company can decide to no longer offer the plan.

Most individuals don't stay in the individual market very long: One study, published in the journal Health Affairs, found that 17 percent of individual market subscribers purchased the same plan for two straight years or longer.

JPMorgan’s $13 billion settlement deal with Justice Dept. at risk of falling apart - The Washington Post

JPMorgan’s $13 billion settlement deal with Justice Dept. at risk of falling apart - The Washington Post: Settlement talks between the Justice Department and JPMorgan Chase are in danger of breaking down over the bank’s demands that it avoid future criminal charges and that another government agency pay some of the $13 billion price tag, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

Federal prosecutors have been working with JPMorgan for months to resolve allegations that the bank knowingly sold securities made up of low-quality mortgages in the lead-up to the financial crisis. As of last week, the nation’s largest bank had agreed to a tentative $13 billion settlement that would expunge multiple government probes. Details of the agreement were being hashed out, but now the sides have reached an impasse.

Cuccinelli (R), the state attorney general, trails businessman Terry McAuliffe (D) by 12 percentage points among likely voters, the survey shows. And Cuccinelli’s decline comes as Virginians are increasingly turned off by the movement that has backed him strongly and with which he shares many views.

Witnesses: Cops Only Shouted Once at 13-Year-Old Before Opening Fire - ABC News: Two women who claim to have witnessed the shooting death of a 13-year-old boy carrying an imitation assault rifle in Santa Rosa, Calif., said deputies only shouted at the teen once before they opened fire.

Each day, Maria Marquez and Juana Rojas pay their respects at the memorial for Andy Lopez, who was shot to death on Tuesday by Sonoma County Sheriff's deputies who mistook the boy's pellet gun for an assault rifle, ABC News' San Francisco station KGO-TV reported.

The women said that they frequent the memorial in hopes of telling Lopez's parents what they saw when their son was killed, according to KGO-TV.

Computer Scientists 'Prove' God Exists - ABC News

Computer Scientists 'Prove' God Exists - ABC News: Two scientists have formalized a theorem regarding the existence of God penned by mathematician Kurt Gödel. But the God angle is somewhat of a red herring -- the real step forward is the example it sets of how computers can make scientific progress simpler.

As headlines go, it's certainly an eye-catching one. "Scientists Prove Existence of God," German daily Die Welt wrote last week.

But unsurprisingly, there is a rather significant caveat to that claim. In fact, what the researchers in question say they have actually proven is a theorem put forward by renowned Austrian mathematician Kurt Gödel -- and the real news isn't about a Supreme Being, but rather what can now be achieved in scientific fields using superior technology.

Man enters burning house to rescue beer - WTVM.com-Columbus, GA News Weather & Sports: COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
Officials are still investigating the cause of a house fire that broke out on 42nd St. near Oates Ave. in Columbus, Thursday afternoon, but residents are blaming a newly installed water heater.

Six adults and two young children were inside watching television when the room began filling with smoke. After the children were rescued and everyone made it outside safely, a man who walks with a cane went back in the burning house to retrieve something he left behind.

"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," said Walter Serpit, "I went back into the house like a dummy and the door shut on me because this back draft was about to kill me."

Serpit managed to save several cans of beer and he escaped the home without getting burned.

The Red Cross arrived shortly after firefighters extinguished the flames and they are helping the family get back on their feet. One Red Cross volunteer at the scene said they were able to respond quickly because a neighbor alerted them to the situation.

Colombian mother sold 12 daughters' virginity, police say - CNN.com: (CNN) -- A mother of 14 in Colombia tried to make ends meet, police say, by pushing her daughters into "hell" and selling their virginity for a couple hundred dollars.

She broke down in tears when she stood in front of the cameras after being arrested in Bogota, the Colombian capital. The Bogota Metropolitan Police say Zapata sold the virginity of 12 daughters to much older men seeking to have sex with young virgins.

Authorities also say the suspect would begin selling her daughters to men as soon as the girls turned 12 years old. She charged anywhere between 300,000 and 400,000 Colombian Pesos ($160 to $212) for a virgin.

Opinion: Confederate flag was the flag of traitors - CNN.com

Opinion: Confederate flag was the flag of traitors - CNN.com: CNN) -- You can debate whether the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism. But the one thing you can't dispute: The Confederate flag was flown by traitors to the United States of America who slaughtered more than 110,000 U.S. soldiers.

I know some will take issue with my calling the Confederacy a band of traitors, but let's be blunt -- that's what they were. They broke from the United States and created their own nation, calling it the Confederate States of America. They issued their own currency, elected their own president and Congress, raised an army and went to war with the United States of America, firing the first shot at Fort Sumter, South Carolina.

Young man linked to 79 killings in Mexico - CNN.com

Young man linked to 79 killings in Mexico - CNN.com: (CNN) -- The most shocking thing about the arrest of a man linked to 79 killings may be that authorities don't find it shocking.

At 20 years old, Juan Pablo Vazquez is accused of killing rivals, a policeman, a stripper and other innocent bystanders.

But you won't find authorities in the northern economic hub of Monterrey, Mexico, using any superlatives to describe the alleged killer. Not the worst they've ever seen, not the most ruthless, not the youngest or most prolific.

That's because Monterrey and its surroundings are an area disputed by rival drug cartels. From 2010 to the present, an average of 108 people have been killed each month in the state of Nuevo Leon, according to official statistics. Monterrey, the capital, has recorded 223 homicides so far this year.

Vazquez's arrest, then, merited a press conference, but no celebration as if an alleged serial killer had been brought down.

"We are witnessing a very severe crisis because of the war between cartels," one Mexican official said.

These Words You Use Every Day Have Racist/Prejudiced Origins, And You Had No Idea

These Words You Use Every Day Have Racist/Prejudiced Origins, And You Had No Idea: When I was a kid, everyone used the phrase Indian giver. We didn't even think about it. We weren't reprimanded by teachers, either. Admittedly, I went to grade school in Texas.

To me, it seems odd that the phrase even still exists. At this point in history, we should all know that it is ridiculous to say that American Indians reneged on their promise to give European settlers land that they had never agreed to give in the first place.

While Indian giver might seem more obviously racist (you certainly wouldn't hear anyone using such a phrase in the office), there are plenty of other phrases that you might use every day that have racist/prejudice origins.

Is The Tea Party Racist? Ask Some Actual, Out-Of-The Closet Racists: WASHINGTON -- Tea Party and Republican leaders have been quick to condemn Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) for his recent comparison of the tea party and the Ku Klux Klan. But avowed racists involved in the white nationalist movement might beg to agree with the Florida Democrat.

The KKK, for its part, isn't sure whether the hood fits. "The tea party is a very widespread organization and there's many tea party groups in the country, so I don't know if they are necessarily even in agreement with each other," pastor Thomas Robb, national director of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, told HuffPost. "Likewise, The Klan, people use the phrase Klan who are not associated with us ... that I would be 100 percent opposed to."

Syrian snipers target pregnant women, unborn babies, doctor says - CNN.com: (CNN) -- An X-ray shows a bullet lodged in a baby's head. The image would be chilling enough without knowing the child was still in its mother's womb when it became the target of snipers hiding in the shadows in northern Syria.

The mother survived. Her baby didn't. And it's not the only one.

Volunteer doctor David Nott, a British surgeon who's worked in several Syrian hospitals with the charity Syria Relief, says snipers are playing a "targeting game," and heavily pregnant women are on the hit list.

USS Forrestal, the Navy's first supercarrier, sold for 1 cent | Fox News

USS Forrestal, the Navy's first supercarrier, sold for 1 cent | Fox News: Here’s a penny for your thoughts: One red cent could’ve landed you the Navy’s first supercarrier, the decommissioned Forrestal.

The U.S. Navy sold the 1,067-foot behemoth to a Texas company, All Star Metals, to be dismantled, scrapped and recycled, Navy officials announced. It's an inauspicious fate for a ship with a colorful — and tragic — history. It's perhaps best known for a 1967 incident in which stray voltage triggered an accidental explosion that struck a plane on the flight deck whose cockpit was occupied by a young John McCain. A chain reaction of blasts and fires ultimately killed 134 men and injured more than 300.

But its rich past and nearly four decades of service are not enough to spare it. The Navy tried to donate the historic ship for use as a memorial or a museum, but no “viable applications” were received.

The 18 Most Ridiculous Startup Ideas That Eventually Became Successful

The 18 Most Ridiculous Startup Ideas That Eventually Became Successful: Even the most well-known venture capitalists have startups they regret passing on.

For John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins, it was Twitter. For Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures, it was Airbnb, the home-rental website that’s now worth an estimated $2.5 billion.

“We made the classic mistake that all investors make,” Wilson recalled in a blog post lamenting the blunder. “We focused too much on what they were doing at the time and not enough on what they could do, would do, and did do.”

It’s hard to blame him. After all, a lot of successful companies sounded stupid when they first launched -- see: Rap Genius -- and the vast majority of new businesses flop, sometimes leaving investors with heavy losses.

Wounded Victim of Racist Serial Killer Recounts Nightmare as Execution Nears | Hatewatch: Before Joseph Paul Franklin, the prolific racist serial killer, is executed, Terry Jackson-Mitchell wants to look the condemned man in the eye and tell him she forgives him for the nightmares and flashbacks that crashed into her life on a summer night in Utah 33 years ago.

That’s when Franklin wounded Jackson-Mitchell, then 15, and shot and killed her two black friends, jogging a few feet from her in a Salt Lake City park.

“I believe in the old saying, forgiveness is a gift you give yourself,” Jackson-Mitchell, now 49, told Hatewatch in a telephone interview Sunday evening. “I forgive him based on what I’ve read about his horrific childhood. And I forgive him because I refuse to allow that night to define me.”

Odierno and Army Secretary John McHugh both addressed the fallout from the budget cuts, as well as the recent partial government shutdown, and appealed to lawmakers to restore some stability to military funding.

"Functioning like this is just dysfunctional," Odierno said.

What the F*ck Was Lululemon Thinking? | Carolyn Gregoire: Yoga mega-retailer Lululemon is no stranger to off-color ad campaigns and embarrassing slip-ups (Who could forget the see-through pants debacle?). But the high-market yogawear chain's latest gaffe might just take the proverbial cake.

In a misguided attempt to appeal to aspiring yogis, Lululemon recently launched a new shopping bag series illustrating yoga's traditional five yamas -- principles, or social contracts, of right living, as outlined in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, a traditional compendium of yoga philosophy with roots in the Hindu faith.

As part of the series, the company has been doling out a reusable tote back with one of the yamas, brahmacharya, the Sanskrit term for "celibacy." Scroll down to view the bag below.

David Blair, Texas Man, Claims Dallas Police Had No Reason To Shoot At Him

David Blair, Texas Man, Claims Dallas Police Had No Reason To Shoot At Him: A Texas man claims that Dallas police fired at least a dozen bullets at him -- for no apparent reason.

David Blair says that he was standing outside of his east Oak Cliff apartment on Oct. 2 when a pair of Dallas police officers approached him. The 41-year-old had just moved in that day, and his girlfriend and 3-year-old son were inside, according to KENS-5.

The Most Interesting Man In The World Is Actually Really Interesting

The Most Interesting Man In The World Is Actually Really Interesting: You may not know Jonathan Goldsmith, but you undoubtedly know Dos Equis' Most Interesting Man In The World. The two, in fact, are the same person.

Goldsmith shot to fame in 2006 when his James Bond-like character started "living vicariously through himself," but in a recent interview with Esquire magazine, Goldsmith has unveiled his own overly interesting experiences. One of which, no big deal, involves saving a young girl's life.

"When I was 18, I started out at the Fresh Air Fund for kids in New York City, and it provided an opportunity for kids with disabilities to do all kinds of activities," Goldsmith, 75, said. "One of the things we dealt with were quite a lot of epileptic kids, and when you have to watch 100 kids playing in a pool, thrashing around, it takes a great deal of concentration to determine a child that's having a grand mal fit or a kid that's just playing."

UConn Failed To Investigate Sexual Assault Reports And Protect Victims, Complaint Claims: It seemed to Kylie Angell that some justice had been served when the University of Connecticut expelled a male student after she reported that he raped her in a campus residence hall in July 2010.

Angell reported the assault to the university at the beginning of the fall 2010 semester, and by October a university hearing had found her assailant responsible for possession of drugs, providing alcohol to a minor, sexual misconduct and breaking and entering.

But the situation changed after he appealed and was allowed back on campus two weeks later. The university did not warn Angell that her attacker was coming back, she said, and instead she learned when he approached her in a campus dining hall on his first day back.

30 Million People Worldwide Are Living As Slaves

30 Million People Worldwide Are Living As Slaves: Modern day slavery still exists, and it's happening at an alarming rate. The Global Slavery Index released a shocking report last week, estimating that almost 30 million people worldwide are living as slaves. The index, compiled by Australian-based rights organization Walk Free Foundation, defines modern day slavery as debt bondage, human trafficking and forced marriage.

The country with the highest proportion of slaves is Mauritania, in West Africa. The report explains that Mauritania has such a high percentage of slaves because people inherit slave status from their ancestors. “It would be comforting to think that slavery is a relic of history, but it remains a scar on humanity on every continent," Walk Free CEO Nick Grono said in a statement provided to The Huffington Post.

Letter surfaces from Abraham Lincoln calling for bipartisanship, transparency | Fox News: A 164-year-old letter penned by Abraham Lincoln proves that calls for transparency and bipartisanship in Washington are nothing new.

The yellowed, handwritten letter, sent out by the congressman from Springfield, Ill., goes up for sale Tuesday morning on the website of Raab Collection, a Philadelphia rare documents dealer with the price set at $80,000. The sale is not an auction, said Nathan Raab, who called the letter “extremely significant.”

Another rare 'sea monster' lands in California: a saber-toothed whale - CNN.com

Another rare 'sea monster' lands in California: a saber-toothed whale - CNN.com: Los Angeles (CNN) -- Oh, Jules Verne or Peter Benchley, where are you, great writers of deep-sea monsters?

For the second time this week, Southern California has seen a rare sea beast washed ashore, far from home waters.

This time, it's a saber-toothed whale, better known to live in deep Alaskan waters than in the warm surf of tourist-choked Venice Beach in Los Angeles where it stranded Wednesday.

In an extraordinary way even for scientists, the carcass of the nearly 15-foot and 2,000-pound whale was intact -- except for a couple of fresh bite marks from sharks. The whale, a female, apparently was barely alive when it came ashore -- a highly unusual sight because beached whales are often badly decomposed or badly eaten by marine life, a local biologist said.

Daily Kos: 'You Can Sell A Kilo Once; You Can Sell A 13-Year-Old Girl 20 Times A Night' - American Slavery: Watching this TED Talk discussion about slavery in America was like taking a punch in the stomach. I had no idea human trafficking existed so blatantly here in our own backyards.
In this video, Tony Talbott candidly talks about his feelings after his first real encounter with human slavery. It was during the Gulf War. At the age of 23, Talbott and his buddies decided to visit a bar in the Philippines called, Sweet Sixteen. He came to find out find the bar/brothel was given that name, not only because there were 16-year olds, but because there were no girls dancing or 'working' there over the age of 16. Let me rephrase; The oldest prostitute was 16 years old. Yes, I had to let that roll around in my brain for a bit, too.

Faced with Washington’s march toward a default, the world has reacted mostly with disbelief that the reigning superpower could fall into such dysfunction, worry over global suffering to come and frustration that American lawmakers could let the problem reach this point.

A common question crossing continents remains quite simple: The Americans aren’t really that unreasonable and self-destructive, are they?

It was yet another moment of decision for Mr. Boehner, who finally finds himself at the crossroads he has been marching toward for weeks: an imminent financial default on the one hand, and on the other an unyielding conservative rank and file that persists with the futile effort to take down President Obama’s health care law even if they also take down the speaker in the process.

Lawyers in theater shootings argue whether Holmes' statements to police can be trial evidence | Fox News

Lawyers in theater shootings argue whether Holmes' statements to police can be trial evidence | Fox News: CENTENNIAL, Colo. – James Holmes' defense lawyers and prosecutors are arguing whether things he told police right after his arrest in the Colorado theater shootings can be used at his trial.

His lawyers are set to argue at a hearing Tuesday that what he said can't be used because police hadn't read him his Miranda rights. The Miranda advisement is the well-known warning that anything a suspect says can be used against him.

Prosecutors say what police asked Holmes before he was read his Miranda rights is legal under a public-safety exemption. They say police wanted to know if Holmes had an accomplice.

Why I Will Never, Ever, Go Back to the United States | Niels Gerson Lohman

Why I Will Never, Ever, Go Back to the United States | Niels Gerson Lohman: After a year of traveling, I had planned a last, short trip. I was going to take the train from Montreal to New Orleans. The travels I had been undertaking earlier this year had brought me to places that were meant to form the background of my second novel.

This trip, however, was for my dad. He, a trumpet player, loved New Orleans and had died a year ago. It felt like the first sensible trip I undertook this year. I had been searching for ways to forget about the last hours at his deathbed. He had been ill for 15 years and his body just would not give up. It was a violent sight. I had decided the trip to New Orleans would put an end to those memories.

7 Ways to Be Insufferable on Facebook | Wait But Why: The memory is vivid.

New Year's Day, 2013. I'm going about my afternoon pleasantly, when I open my email and a friend has forwarded me what she calls a particularly heinous Facebook status from her Newsfeed, written by someone we'll call Daniel. It read:2012 was a biggg year for me. I left my amazing job at NBC to move back to Chicago. I started dating my angel, Jaime Holland. I started yoga (thanks Jake Fisher & Jonah Perlstein!). I wrote an album with Matthew Johannson. Wrote another album I'm proud of. I got to hang with Owen Wilson, and worked with Will Ferrell on an amazing project. Had a conversation about Barack Obama with David Gregory. Danced. Joined a kickball team. Won a couple awards. Helped my sister plan her summer trip. Swam a lot. Golfed a little. Cried more than you would think. Read The World According to Garp. Saw Apocolypse Now. Went to Miami for the NBA Finals. Drank the best orange juice I've ever had with Davey Welch. Tweeted. Went to amazing weddings in Upstate New York. Drank a ridiculous amount of milk. Learned how to make sand art. Saw a great light show. Saw the Angels and Lakers. Fell in love with Jawbone Up. Cooked with Jaime. Gardened with Jaime. Watched Homeland with Jaime. Wrestled with Jaime. Laughed for hours with Jaime. Fell in love with Jaime's family. Worked on a play. Played World of Warcraft. Did some improv. Played a ton of the guitar. Really just had a wild, amazing year. What a world.

First Cave Artists May Have Been Mostly Women, New Study Suggests

First Cave Artists May Have Been Mostly Women, New Study Suggests: You go, girls. New research suggests that many of the first artistic masters were women, not men.

For years, researchers have assumed that ancient cave paintings created tens of thousands of years ago were made by men. This belief persisted because so much cave art is related to hunting, the domain of the prehistoric male. However, an American archaeological anthropologist now believes the measurements of ancient cave handprints suggest that the majority of those artists were women.

Dean Snow, an emeritus professor of anthropology at Penn State University, has spent a decade gathering data on cave paintings ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 years old, reports National Geographic. Snow's research culminated in a paper recently published in the journal American Antiquity. His report concludes three-quarters of the cave handprints included in the paper were left by females.

Why Do We Kiss?

Why Do We Kiss?: Kissing is fun and it feels nice. But -- why do we do it?

According to new research, one big reason is that we need to size up our future mates.

The research, conducted by scientists from Oxford University, also explores the link between kissing and relationship quality, and differences in the value of kissing between men and women. The findings are published in two studies in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior and the journal Human Nature.

"Mate choice and courtship in humans is complex," study researcher Robin Dunbar, a professor at Oxford, said in a statement. "It involves a series of periods of assessments where people ask themselves, 'Shall I carry on deeper into this relationship?' Initial attraction may include facial, body and social cues. Then assessments become more and more intimate as we go deeper into the courtship stages, and this is where kissing comes in."

DEA still dubious despite fresh report of nightmare drug Krokodil surfacing in Illinois | Fox News

DEA still dubious despite fresh report of nightmare drug Krokodil surfacing in Illinois | Fox News: Even with a new batch of purported cases of Krokodil being used in the U.S., federal authorities say they are skeptical that the nightmare drug that originated in Russia has reached American soil.

Fears that the drug — which is made by cooking codeine with various toxic chemicals, including lighter fluid, gasoline and industrial cleaners — could make its way to the United States have mounted since 2011, when a Drug Enforcement Administration official told FoxNews.com it was on the agency's radar overseas. But even with a Joliet, Ill., drug treatment physician going public this week with word that he's seen as many as four users of the drug, the DEA is not ready to recognize it as an immediate threat.

“We, the DEA, are not seeing cases of it,” agency spokeswoman Dawn Dearden told FoxNews.com. “Nothing’s been turned into any of our labs. As far as the DEA is concerned, we have not seen any cases.”

Ariel Castro May Have Died From Auto-Erotic Asphyxiation, Not Suicide: Report

Ariel Castro May Have Died From Auto-Erotic Asphyxiation, Not Suicide: Report: COLUMBUS, Ohio -- COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro's death by hanging in his prison cell may not have been suicide after all, but an attempt to choke himself for a sexual thrill, authorities said Thursday. They also said two guards falsified logs documenting the number of times they checked on Castro before he died.

The report from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction suggests — but does not conclude — that Castro may have died as the result of auto-erotic asphyxiation, whereby individuals achieve sexual satisfaction while choking themselves into unconsciousness.

Gym mat death shocker: Body stuffed with newspaper - CNN.com: Valdosta, Georgia (CNN) -- The death of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was awful enough for his parents. Then came the doubts about investigators' conclusion that it was an accident.

But the discovery that their son's body and skull had been stuffed with newspaper before burial added a horrific new dimension to their anguish and further fueled their skepticism of the official findings.

"We have been let down again," his father, Kenneth Johnson, told CNN. "When we buried Kendrick, we thought we were burying Kendrick, not half of Kendrick."

Kendrick Johnson was found dead in a gym at Lowndes County High School in January. State medical examiners concluded that the three-sport athlete suffocated after getting stuck in a rolled-up gym mat while reaching for a sneaker.

How Kaiser Used An Anti-Consumer Clause To Skirt Payment For Fatal Cancer | ThinkProgress

How Kaiser Used An Anti-Consumer Clause To Skirt Payment For Fatal Cancer | ThinkProgress: Maui high school teacher Michael Siopes had a rare, aggressive, and fatal form of cancer that Kaiser, his insurance provider, had never treated before. His Kaiser physician said he would have to do an “internet search” to figure out a treatment plan, but that he likely had a month to live. Siopes found a specialist at Duke University, and, with his Kaiser doctor’s referral, underwent successful treatment that eliminated his treatment.
After the time-sensitive treatment was complete, however, Kaiser refused to pay the $250,000 bill, saying it was “elective, non-emergency, non-urgent care” and that Kaiser could have provided the treatment in-house. That was enough of an alleged injustice. But as in all access to justice cases, that is where Siopes’ story begins, not ends. Siopes learned that, like countless consumers and employees, he could not sue in court, because he was subject to an arbitration clause.
