Second Case of West Nile Reported in VT - myChamplainValley.com: BURLINGTON, Vt. - A second case of West Nile Virus has been reported in Vermont Thursday.

The Health Department says while the peak of West Nile virus is usually in late August and early September, mosquitoes remain active until the first widespread frost.

The case happened in Chittenden county in late September. The woman has since recovered.

This season, the Health Department says, West Nile virus was detected in mosquito pools in 12 different towns includng Milton and Colchester in Chittenden county.

Symptoms of West Nile virus include high fever, muscle aches, headache, and fatigue. The Health Department says most people who become infected with West Nile do not become ill. About 20% experience flu-like symptoms and fewer than 1% develop a more severe ilness that affects the nervous. When the nervous system is involved, symptoms include a stiff neck and severe headache.
